Finding Your Way Back to You: My Personal Journey (And How to Start Yours)
I remember the exact moment I realized I had lost myself.
I was sitting in my office, staring at my carefully crafted five-year plan, surrounded by achievements that should have made me feel accomplished. On paper, everything looked perfect. Yet inside, I felt hollow. Like I was living someone else's life, following someone else's script.
Maybe you know this feeling too.
That nagging sensation that despite "doing everything right," something essential is missing. That despite all your capabilities, you're somehow not living your truth. I spent years trying to fill this void with more achievements, more certifications, more external validation.
Until I hit a wall. And that wall became my greatest teacher.
Today, I want to share with you the real, messy, beautiful journey of finding my way back to myself – and the practical steps you can take to start your own journey of rediscovery.
Step 1: The Pause
The first step was the hardest: I had to stop. Stop doing, stop achieving, stop trying to figure it all out. Just stop.
Try this:
Set aside 10 minutes each morning before checking your phone
Sit in silence
Ask yourself: "How am I feeling right now?" (Not thinking – feeling)
Write down whatever comes up, without judgment
Step 2: The Listening
Once I created space, I started hearing things I'd been drowning out for years. The quiet whispers of my true desires, my genuine interests, my authentic voice.
Practice this:
Keep a "True Voice Journal"
Write down three types of moments each day:
When did I feel most alive?
When did I feel most drained?
When did I feel most myself?
Step 3: The Unlearning
This was fascinating. I started noticing how many of my "wants" weren't actually mine. That prestigious job I was chasing? It was my father's dream. That lifestyle I thought I needed? Borrowed from social media.
Try this exercise:
List your current goals
For each one, ask:
Where did this goal come from?
Who would I be disappointing if I didn't achieve this?
If no one would ever know about this achievement, would I still want it?
Step 4: The Permission Slip
One day, I wrote myself a permission slip. Sounds silly, but it was powerful. I gave myself permission to:
Not know the end result
Change my mind
Disappoint others
Be messy in my journey
Start over
Your turn: Write yourself a permission slip. What do you need to give yourself permission to do, feel, or be?
Step 5: The Experiments
Instead of trying to figure out my entire life purpose at once, I started running small "authenticity experiments":
Saying no to things that didn't feel right, even if they looked good on paper
Following my curiosity without needing to justify it
Expressing opinions that differed from my usual crowd
Start here:
Choose one small area of your life
Make one decision based purely on what feels true to you
Notice how it feels in your body
Document the experience
Step 6: The Integration
This is where I am now – integrating my rediscovered self into my daily life. Some days it's seamless. Other days it feels like I'm speaking a new language. Both are perfect.
Daily practices that help:
Morning check-in: "What does my authentic self need today?"
Evening reflection: "When did I honor my truth today?"
Weekly review: "What aligned? What didn't?"
Here's what I've learned: Finding your way back to yourself is not a destination – it's a practice. Some days you'll feel crystal clear, others completely lost. That's not just okay, it's part of the journey.
The key isn't to figure it all out at once. The key is to start listening to that quiet voice inside that's been waiting to be heard.
Remember:
You don't need to blow up your life to start this journey
Small steps count
Confusion is part of the process
Your inner knowing is trustworthy
Start where you are. Start small. But start.
Because beneath all the layers of who you think you should be, who you really are is waiting patiently to be rediscovered.
